'I'm very, very lucky' | Snow-covered tree branch falls on Muskegon woman

She's OK, but she wants to spread awareness about the dangers of falling branches. Heavy snow knocked out power to thousands.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Chelsea McArthur was just trying to dust the snow off of her car when the unexpected happened.

A large tree branch weighed down with heavy snow broke free from the trunk and landed directly on her and her car Tuesday.

"I was just trying to clean the snow off my car, and BAM. I’m okay, but it really was a crazy experience. I’m very very lucky," McArthur said.

She lives in downtown Muskegon, where snowfall and wind downed power lines and knocked out power for more than 40,000 Consumers Energy customers.

She wants to spread awareness about the dangers of falling branches, and it may be a good idea to look up and have situational awareness this winter.

Crews are working hard to restore that power by the end of the day Wednesday, but many remain in the dark.

Concerns for downed power lines, continuing falling tree branches and icy conditions caused the cities of Muskegon, Muskegon Heights and North Muskegon to push back trick-or-treating to Saturday, Nov. 4 from 6 p.m.

This Halloween saw an unprecedented amount of snowfall along the lakeshore.

In Muskegon County, we saw numerous reports of 8" to 10" of snow. At the Muskegon County Airport, the snowfall total was 8.8'', a record for October 31, and the second-highest, single-day amount prior to November 15. On November 14, 1908, Muskegon received 16.0".
